Mr. Joseph Tissot

Teacher, French

M.A., French, L'École française (Betty Ashbury Jones MA ’86 School of French), Middlebury College

Greetings, I am Mr. Tissot and I teach French and Spanish at The Founders Academy.

I have taught both French and Spanish in New Hampshire since 2016. I have always been a glossophile, a lover of languages. My second language is French and I am half Swiss-French. I am also a hopeless francophile. My discovery of French has led me to unforgettable places and experiences, and to lasting friendships. Ever since my first class at the age of twelve, my love of French led me to explore other languages, such as: Haitian Creole, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Hungarian, Scottish Gaelic, Maya, Hindi, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek. Eventually, I decided that not only did I want to speak French, I also wanted to teach others and to expose them to francophone culture.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and in New Jersey, but I have also travelled around the world to ten countries across four continents and there are still so many that I want to see. My goal is to set foot on the remaining three. However, no matter where I go, each time I have a strong yearning for the ability to converse with the inhabitants and to authentically experience their ways of life.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my wife Heidi and son, Elijah, practicing calligraphy and drawing, occasionally gaming on a PS3 or N64 (I am not that boring), cooking dishes from around the world, numismatics, etymology, bibliophilia, antiquing, reading and researching subjects of history and linguistics, running, hiking, traveling, and learning and practicing new languages and engaging and interacting with other cultures.
